Besides teaching percussion at the Liszt Ferenc Academy in Budapest, Szabolcs Joó is currently the solo timpanist of the Hungarian National Philharmonic Orchestra.


He has been awarded in numerous competitions in Hungary, Belgium and Bohemia. He used to be a receiver of the Fischer Annie Scholarship. As an active chamber musician, he had performed with Renaud Capuçon, Clemens Hagen, Zoltán Kocsis, Dezső Ránki, Kirill Gernstein and the Amadinda orchestra.


The members of the Hungarian National Philharmonic Orchestra elected him Artist of the Year in 2015.


He is the proud father of three children.
